MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos were tagged as the most emotional people in the world in a recent US study. Netizens told us why.

On social networking site Facebook and micro-blogging site Twitter, Filipino netizens discussed the possible reasons behind the society's reported sensitive character, and whether being too emotional is more of a positive or a negative thing.

Many of them took notice of the so-called "teleserye mentality" of the Filipino people.

Earlier on ANC, psychologist Randy Dellosa said Filipinos love to see drama not just on a television show but also in real life.

"Dapat palaging may drama kasi nagiging boring," he said.

Likewise, many netizens said that Filipinos' love of dramatic soap operas could be the primary reason behind their emotional character.

They said Filipinos easily relate with teleseryes because these shows somehow depict their real lives.

Twitter user John Henry Cipriano said, "PH, most emotional nation according to news. Proof? We are a nation of teleseryes and drama queens. LOL. @bandila"

Netizen Jojo Lucido posted on Facebook, "But in reality .. Growing up in Manila is a drama itself... It's survival of the fittest, especially for poor family and their outlet is music and Tv."

'At least we are emotionally healthy'

Some Filipino social media users said it is better to be called as the most emotional people in the world rather than be tagged as the most emotionless ones.

They claimed being open with their true feelings somehow helps their well-being.

Texter Chicks of Quezon City said, "We can easily release emotions whether happiness or sadness. We can adjust. That's emotionally healthy."

Dr. Tony Leachon, likewise, said, "Filipinos with so many problems, especially typhoons, economy, etc., are resilient and hospitable, and respond well to adversities."

Aiko Petite posted on Facebook, "Eh kasi tayo lang naman kasi ang may pusong mamon eh ung iba kasi pusong bato nyahahahhaha"

Stanley dela rosa, whose Twitter username is @ohohstan, said, "Filipinos are the most EMOTIONAL PEOPLE in the WORLD! wow! :))) We just proved that we have BIG HEARTS! :D"

"At least di manhid.....:)," Facebook user Erlinda Cabug-os said.

Likewise, netizen Geisha Rose Teopes said, "Tara iyak tau!huhu!ok lng mging mdrama wag lng poker face!"

Pinoys most violent people too?

While some said it helps to fully express their emotions, some claimed that anything in excess is bad, meaning having too much emotions can also be a negative thing.

Some netizens claimed that not only are Filipino people emotional but are also overreacting at times.

And these over-sensitivity and overreaction cause some people's violent behavior, they said.

Facebook user Bogart Ramos said, "Too sensitive for comfort. Try arguing with a Filipino and you'll get stab if you get the upper hand in the argument, especially when drunk. PIKON."

Filipinos are "among the most violent people too. So much crime and killings," said Raymond Olsen.
