First aid tips for the New Year revelry

MANILA, Philippines - Firecrackers have injured a total of 107 people from December 21 to December 27, the Department of Health said Thursday.

One person was also hit by a stray bullet during the holiday period.

First aid is important for any firecracker-related injury because not everyone lives near a hospital, a doctor said.

According to Dr. Rey Salinel, if you get injured by a fiercracker, you wash the wound with running water and soap for 10 to 15 minutes and cover it with a clean cloth.

If a cloth is not available, one can use a kitchen wrap or foil, he said.

If the bleeding doesn't stop, "pwede po natin syang talian at nakataas ang braso para po mapigilan ang sobrang pagdudugo," Salinel said.

If you lose a finger, look for it and put it in a plastic bag with ice. "kung 'di makita ang daliri, huwag nang paghirapan po. Ang importante maitakbo sa pinakamalapit na ospital," he added.

If your eye gets  injured, wash your face gently and cover with a clean cloth or handkerchief.

"Huwag lang pong kukusutin ang mata. itakbo agad sa pinakamalapit na ospital," he said.

Salinel said one should never put tomatoes or toothpaste on burns.

"Pwede po natin syang hugasan ng malinis na tubig, kung kinakailangan malamig. Huwag diretsong yelo. Nakakasakit po ng balat po iyun. Alkaline soap, residue sa mga paputok," he added.

When a firecracker is accidentally ingested, make the victim eat egg whites. Children should swallow 6 to 8 egg whites while adults should consume 8 to 12 egg whites.

"Maging metikuloso po. Iyung mga batang sumasakit ang tiyan, nagsusukam bantayan po natin baka nakalunok ng watusi," Salinel said. "Iyung watusi, nakakasunog ng bituka."

After applying first aid, bring the victim immediately to a hospital.
