A communist New People’s Army rebel died while another rebel and a soldier were wounded following a clash in Baybay City in Leyte on Thursday, a military spokesman reported.
Troops from the Army’s 19th Infantry Battalion were on a combat operation when they caught up with about 15 rebels at Bunga village at around 9 a.m. Thursday, said 8th Infantry Division spokesman Maj. Armand Rico.
Rico said the troops were sent to the area after “concerned residents” reported the presence of the rebels.
The rebel casualties were based on the revelation of civilians, said Rico. He said the injury of the wounded soldier is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
The military is aiming to defeat the insurgents on or before President Arroyo finishes her term next year. Latest military estimates indicated that the NPA has over 4,000 fighters as of May this year.
