NBI says sorry to Jason Aguilar
MANILA, Philippines - An official of the National Bureau of Investigation apologized to an overseas Filipino worker who was incarcerated in Qatar and repatriated to the country after he was mistaken for road rage slay suspect Jason Ivler.
Angelito Magno, chief of the NBI's Special Action Unit, said he is willing to provide proper documentation that will clear OFW Jason Aguilar's name.
"Jason, we are very sorry for the incident that happened to you. We feel sorry. Sabi nga ng iba ay biktima ka din ni Jason Ivler Aguilar," he said in an interview on ANC's "The Big Picture" with Ricky Carandang.
Aguilar was working as a welder in Qatar when he was detained for seven days then deported. He has the same name and birthdate as that of Jason Aguilar Ivler, the suspect in the murder of the son of Presidential Chief of Staff Undersecretary Renato Ebarle Sr.
Former Labor Undersecretary Susan Ople was dismayed with government's treatment of the case. She said government agencies would have acted differently if the incident happened to a prominent individual. Although she lauded government's efforts to provide livelihood for Aguilar, Ople said she was disappointed that no one in government has admited to the lapses that led to Aguilar's detention and deportation.
Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Esteban Conejos has sent letters to the NBI and the government of Qatar requesting for details on Aguilar's arrest and deportation. Conejos said the information would help the DFA prevent a repeat of the incident.
"We have to get the bottom of this. We don't want this to happen again...This is a good case for us to review the rules to avoid similar incident in the future," Conejos said.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) have promised to provide livelihood assistance to Aguilar. They are also willing to help him get another job overseas. But after what he went through, Aguilar said he no longer wants to work abroad.

Nakakaawang kababayan
Napakasaklap.
