The rise of the strongmen: Gordon and BF

Posted at 01/27/2010 12:45 AM | Updated as of 01/27/2010 1:57 PM

Richard Gordon and Bayani Fernando are proud of their ticket. Fernando believes they are game changers. Gordon says that they want to change the mindset of people.

“For a change, we’re not going to elect legislators who have done nothing; who have shown nothing.”

Bayani’s last option

Their path to glory together did not have an auspicious beginning. There were no plans to run together, as both men initially intended to run for President. Bayani claims that he did his best to run as the standard bearer of his party Lakas.

“I really did my best. To the last moment to I decide to run as President. As everyone knows, I’ve lost my party. The merger of the Lakas-Kampi actually became a flag of convenience, or a party of convenience. Actually that one we’ve lost all reason to ask anyone for loyalty.”

Fernando believes that if Lakas had remained solid, he would have had a better chance at being chosen as standard-bearer.

“ I was more loyal, like no one can dispute that I was more loyal than the other [standard bearer Gilbert Teodoro]. But we have set aside loyalty. As far as I know, Lakas is practically done.”

The party, says Fernando, as good as erased itself. He started hunting for a vice-president, and went to Dick Gordon to convince the senator to run as his vice president.

“Kasi si Dick Gordon na lang ang natitira eh. Si Dick Gordon na lang ang natitira. Lahat may vice presidents na sila.” [Because Dick Gordon was the only one left. Everyone had vice presidents.]

Gordon’s winning campaign

Gordon says he had been a longtime friend of Fernando.

“And he said he wanted to run for President, I said I too want to run for President.

“And he said, ‘I have a helicopter; I have an airplane. We could be ready.’

“Well I said, ‘I have more experience than you do. I have more of a track record than you do. I know foreign policy, because I was vice chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy. We will be needing that.’ And I said that I’ve been around the block.

“It was a little harder to convince Marides [Fernando’s wife].”

Fernando says that he Gordon began enumerating all his qualifications for the job.

“He was able to out talk me.”

Why Bayani is Dick’s man

Gordon admires many things about Bayani Fernando. He said he admired the man’s forthright and straightforward manner. He said he admired what Fernando had done for Marikina. Most of all, Dick Gordon admired Bayani Fernando’s admiration for Dick Gordon.

“In spite of his visage, he’s very humble. You know, I’ve heard him say, ‘I learned this from Dick Gordon.’ He would say that on TV and radio. That impressed me because in this country, we always try to bring down other people.”

The ineptitude of Aquino, Villar and Estrada

“To my mind, I said, we have the best record, we may not have all the resources but the resources that we have is the most important. That is leadership, results, integrity.”

Gordon believes their tandem is better than that of their opponents. Both he and Fernando had made successes of their own cities, Subic and Marikina, unlike other presidential candidates.

He was referring to presidential candidate Senator Benigno Aquino III: “Look at all the people running against us. Look at Tarlac, in spite of all of people out there from the same families. They have not changed Tarlac.

He was also referring to presidential candidate and former House Speaker Senator Manny Villar: “Look at the other people, like in Las Pinas. It’s so crowded and all that, and yet what was their record? Speaker? Senate president? What is the record?

“People have got to look at the record of people who are running.

Gordon was also referring to presidential candidate former president Joseph Estrada.

“We have a president who is running again, who was ousted, and yet they’re challenging our people again to elect him.”

Perfect match: Bayani and Dick

Fernando feels that his team-up with Gordon is a perfect match, given all their similarities.

He dictates them, one by one.

  1. Gordon’s father was mayor. Fernando’s father was mayor.
  2. Gordon was mayor. Fernando was mayor.
  3. Gordon’s wife was mayor. Fernando’s wife was mayor.
  4. Gordon was a cabinet secretary. Fernando was a cabinet secretary.
  5. Gordon became administrator of a development authority, Subic Bay. Fernando became administrator of a development authority, the MMDA.

However, Fernando admits Gordon has the advantage, and thus deserves the presidency.

1. Gordon was a member of the Constitutional Convention.
2. Gordon became a senator.
3. Gordon has 33 years of public service. Fernando only has 17 and a half.

Therefore, “He’s better than I.”

On the issues: not so perfect

On the VFA

Both Gordon and Fernando agree that there is a need for the maintenance of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA).

“In no uncertain terms,” says Gordon, “I support the VFA .I don’t know why we have an inferiority complex with America. We have 3 million people out there and we have a leverage if we have a relationship with them. And besides, look at our air force. It’s become so decrepit, it’s all air with no force and we need the support of our allies.”

On the Mindanao insurgency

They take different approaches on the Mindanao insurgency. Gordon wants to develop Mindanao and eliminate the root cause of the insurgency.

“I am not just for peace. I am for progress in Mindanao.”

Fernando wants to take a hard line.

“Somehow, siguro, tigasan na natin.”

On the Reproductive Health Bill

It is regarding the Reproductive Health Bill that the perfect match clearly does not fit.

Gordon feels the reproductive health bill can be fine-tuned, and that although he is Catholic, he believes that people should have the right to choose which methods to use for contraception—with the exception of abortion.

Fernando says he stands by the precepts of his Roman Catholic religion. He also says the population has reached its peak already so the RH bill is too late and unnecessary.

“Go for natural methods.”

On homosexuality, representation, and the partly effeminate members of Congress

The tandem seem to agree on the issue of homosexuality. Gordon feels homosexuals have no choice, and he respects that. Fernando claims to be liberal, and says he looks at homosexuals as co-equals.

However, Fernando also feels that homosexuals do not need representation in Congress, as is the demand of party list group “Ang Ladlad.”

“A big part of the population or a big part of that congress—you’ll never know. Many of those seated in the congress now are maybe homosexual—or at least partly effeminate.”

On Gordon’s dynasty

Fernando says Gordon is the team’s big brother. After he wins for president, Fernando is promised that he will be next in line.

For Gordon, there must be continuity in governance.

“After I am President, after that exposure, [Fernando] can be President. Then we’ll have to look for somebody else who will continue.”

Good but not good enough!!!

I love you both... I believe you can both be a real good leaders. Pero, one thing that i really doubt with you is that both of you were silent with the corrupt administration and all the more you supported the administration.

I believe that you deserve to have a better chance of running, but with your alliance with the administration for the past few years just shows that there is still a blood of being a TRAPO running in your veins.

I am suppose to vote for you if Noynoy and Bro.Eddie did not run. Sayang... both of you were good, but have not exemplified a good enough example from keeping yourself undefiled from being TRAPO. That is why i am convinced that it will be hard for you to lead our nation for moral recovery.

I will go for Bro.Eddie.

Bayani tried his best to

Bayani tried his best to modernize Manila. A guy who catched the people's heart when it comes to his MMDA policies.

Gordon and Bayani deserves the Filipino vote for Presidency

5

Before Sen. Richard “Dick” Gordon filed his certificate of candidacy for president, I don’t have yet a presidentiable bet because I know that BF won’t run. But now, I am announcing to facebook and here in my blog that I am going to vote for him. He must be taken seriously. I want him to be my President.

He is not the perfect candidate but I think he is the lesser evil. Although he doesn’t handle the media well because of his strong personality, (he seems to be an irritable person and too disciplinarian that will turn off the masses) I just hope people will vote wisely and realize that HE IS A LOT BETTER THAN:

1. MONEY VILLAR – accused of inserting budget allocations to gain more money under his “C5 at taga” program, but cannot clearly redeem himself.
2. NOLI DE CASTRO – demolished mercilessly squatters along the railway without relocation for his commission on the project
3. NOYNOY AQUINO – Ever wonder what he did during all those years that he was a Congressman and now as a Senator? He is not Ninoy or Cory. Kris Aquino speaks more meaningful than him. I didn’t see a political will. I didn’t see the motivation and drive to become the most responsible human in the Philippines. If it wasn’t for the death of his mom, he won’t be noticed. What are the similarities between him and his parents? Are people completely the same if blood-related? Genetics doesn’t work alone. He may have a good child development because he was raised by heroes. Even so, his platforms matter the most and they are not something to be admired. “Ipamigay nya muna ang Hacienda Luisita!”
4. GIBO TEODORO – He may have a good profile being a HARVARD LAWYER. Actually I admire his intelligence when answering to media people. And he is maybe a “Clean Guy” in comparison to GMA but sorry, I see same shit here. Iintelligence is not and shouldn’t be the main factor to restore honor to the philippines, but someone who really cares and has high INTEGRITY. GMA is also from Harvard who boasted to be a former classmate of Bill Clinton. She’s so intelligent that she gets away easily from all the controversies. So far!
5. ERAP ESTRADA – Let us not discuss the past. Let us stop there. Put him back to his jail! His filing of candidacy just made me laugh. Why does he keep fooling us, Filipinos right in our very miserable faces?
6. BRO. EDDIE VILLANUEVA – Let us not put religion and politics as one. Too much redundancy!!!

On the other hand, Richard Gordon has gotten many accusations as well and people don’t like his straightforwardness and abrasiveness. Some may call him “puro PORMA lang, MAYABANG, PAPOGI WALA namang PAGKILOS, MASUNGIT, and CORRUPT.”One of the accusations thrown at him is hitching piggyback ride on Red Cross.

Some of these maybe true but they aren’t the worst things a person can do. It can qualify as instances of being not perfect or human. But I definitely want to defend him about his issue in PNRC. I don’t think he eats the money. From what I heard, he is a Redcross volunteer since 17 years old. I had listened to him in Morning Rush during Typhoon Ondoy and I think that he made a lot of improvement in handling the Red Cross. He joined in different activities in Red Cross and this is not out of recognition and praises because those missions were not publicized. He has done a lot of projects in Red Cross as the Governor of the International Federation of Red Cross societies. And he did not boast about it directly, it was revealed through his answers in some random questions by Chico and Delamar.

Just to refresh us, one of his biggest accomplishments was transforming the former US Naval Base in Subic into a world-class economic zone, imposing discipline in the vast free trade zone.

I want to convince each of you to Vote for him because he has more actions and accomplishments than political sins. He is not your trapo- type, “full of words and promises” candidate. He is the Best Presidential Candidate in 2010, IMO. BF should win as his VP

Gordon - Fernando tried and tested and capable

WE need leaders who have polotical will para maisagawa ang nararapat na pagbabago sa ating bayan. That is what is missing on other presidentiables.

Gordon-Bayani anxiety

Again, Why fear the Gordon-Bayani ticket? i have been reading chat exchanges on the matter and it makes me wonder why would there be a concern toward a tandem that according to the newspapers, fare poorly on the surveys?

i am leaning towards this tandem because my only criteria is "PROVEN LEADERSHIP SKILLS" something of which NONE of the other candidates posses. If anyone could prove otherwise, please convince me. Because no other candidate could claim that they have "uplifted the standard of living of their people".

PROVEN LEADERSHIP SKILLS is not just having a following - this is just popularity. Leadership is making this following work for the betterment of the community.

it occurs to me that the Gordon-Bayani nay-sayers are afraid of the change that this tandem could impose. This country needs change, but the question is... are we ready for that change. there are those in this country who want things to be the same for their own personal benefit.

There is a senatorial candidate Alex Lacson from the yellow camp. he wrote a book, "12 steps every filipino should do" (or something to that effect) i think he should visit Olongapo and Marikina to see his 12 steps at work. don't get me wrong, it is a good book that every filipino should read. just that... "been there, done that"

but let's go back to the fear of GORDON-BAYANI:

is it because they are the right persons for the job?

is it because they have the leadership experience?

is it because the change they present is what we really need but do not want?

is it because they the iron will to carry out their promises?

is it because with them, we will have to NOW FOLLOW THE LAW?

IF YOU LOVE THIS COUNTRY, THEN BE READY FOR THE CHANGE
