THE SEARCH FOR THE NEXT PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT HAS BEGUN ON ANC

ROUND ONE

Escudero vs. Gordon vs. Panlilio vs. Roxas vs. Teodoro

Five presidential aspirants gathered for the first time to prove they have what it takes to hold the highest position in the land.

Here's what they said at the
“Countdown to 2010: An ANC Leadership Forum”
last May 11 at the Ateneo De Manila University.

Francis Joseph “Chiz” Guevara Escudero
Age: 39
Birth Date: October 10, 1969
Vision of Governance: The next leader should be an effective change agent. He or she must follow and enforce the law. Can he or she also inspire us?

On President Arroyo’s positive contribution to the country. “Dahil sa ilang pag-aabuso sa batas, dahil sa ilang paglabag sa batas, dahil sa ipinagkait sa marami sa ating mga kababayan at hirap na dinaranas ng ating mga kababayan...minulat at ginising niya at marahil sa ilang parte ginalit niya ang maraming Pilipino para seryosohin ang kanilang pagpili ng susunod na pinuno natin.”

On the last movie he has seen. “You watch a movie not to feel depressed, you watch a movie to be inspired and to be encouraged. Kung kaya, ang huli kong pelikulang pinanood ay ‘Kasal, Kasali at Kasalo’ nina Juday at Ryan.”

On the 2010 national elections."Inaangkin na namin ang halalan na ito. Inaangkin na namin ang pamahalaang ito. Di na naming hahayaang maging sunod-sunuran na lang kami dahil ang aming paniniwala sa ngayon, ang kabataan hindi lamang pag-asa ng bayan, ang kabataan dapat maasahan na ng bayan.”

Richard “Dick” Juico Gordon
Age: 63
Birth Date: August 5, 1945
Vision of Governance: What this country needs is not a change of men but a change in men.

On President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. “Masinop mag-aral, may work ethic. Ang sabit niya ay sa governance…You have to be resolute in so far as your leadership is concerned. That I think is something na nagkulang siya.”

On how he will make a difference as a president. “Baguhin ang attitude. Aim high. Mag-ambisyon tayo. Bawal ang tamad—work ethic. Lalong bawal ang tanga—mag-aral tayo. Duty muna bago ang sarili. Dignidad at determinasyon—ginawa namin sa Subic iyon.”

On why he admires his father former mayor James L. Gordon. “He was a man born an American, but elected to be a Filipino… Pardon me if I’m getting emotional because sa tingin ko maraming hero sa mundo but you have to live your heroism not during your death but during your whole life. Sapagkat iyon ang nakita ko (sa kaniya).”

Eddie “Among Ed” Tongol Panlilio
Age: 55
Birth Date: December 6, 1953
Vision of Governance: Stand up against bad governance, social ills of jueteng and quarrying abuses.

On the factors that will make him run for national office. “If the people would like me to run, feel, believe that I should run for the presidency or for the vice presidency, kung tutulungan ako, then I might go for it.”

On his “unpleasant” relationship with Pampanga politicians.
“Well, I would say that, also many like me...I believe deep in my heart, it is the people who espouse bad politics who hate me. Remember, I was able to curb…at least to minimize corrupt practices in my sphere of influence.”

On his stand on the issue of family planning. “I believe we should address this in a spirit of dialogue, and I don’t believe we have dialogue that much…This issue is connected with poverty, with lack of education, so we might be negotiating and debating up there but the underlying causes are not addressed. So I believe these should be addressed first.”

Manuel “Mar” Araneta Roxas II
Age: 51
Birth Date: May 13, 1957
Memorable Quote: Do I want change for our country? The answer is yes. Do I think I can do a better job? The answer is yes.

On the state of the country today. “Our nation today is on a platform or a foundation of sand. Hindi tayo nakapatong sa matibay na bato ng moralidad at katarungan. Kaya kahit anong pera na gastusin natin sa budget nitong taon na ito…kahit anong pagsisikap ng ating mga kababayan, hindi pa rin tayo makabuo, wala pa rin tayong napapala, o di kaya naman, hindi tayo umuusad.”

On the issue saying he’s just using Korina Sanchez. “Mahal ko si Korina. Matagal kaming nagsama—limang taon. Nagkakaintindihan kami, may pangarap kami para sa isa’t-isa at matibay an gaming samahan. Tulad ng sinabi mo, mga kritiko ko ang nagsasabi noon. So, inggit lang sila.”

On the global financial crisis. “Ang bawat bansa ay pinoproteksiyonan ang kanilang bawat interest. Iyan din ang dahil kung bakit noong ako ay nasa DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) ay hindi ako sumang-ayon na matuloy itong Doha Globalization Round. Bumoto ako na itigil ito dahil pinagsasamantalahan tayo. At iyan naman ang aking track record. Sa bawat pagkakataon na maaaring manindigan, doon ako parati kampi sa api.”

Gilberto “Gibo” Cojuangco Teodoro Jr.
Age: 44
Birth Date: June 14, 1964
Vision of Governance: The Philippines must be a stable platform of investment, with strong institutions, peace and order, and the efficient delivery of basic goods.

On the “Cojuangco” factor. “Kung may sense po at nasa batas at nasa lugar ang kanilang (Cojuangco relatives) mga suhestiyon sino ba namang tututol. Pero kung hindi po nasa lugar, kaya naman po nating tutulan iyan at napatunayan na po natin iyan.”

On amending the Philippine Constitution. “Ang aking pananaw, hindi lang kailangan ng values or renewal of values or pananaw. Institutions shape behavior. It motivates behavior. And I think our institutions, time and again, people have said they need to be changed.”

On being associated with an “unpopular” president. “Hindi ako takot maging John McCain. Dito ako naninindigan, dito ako naninilbihan… Hindi naman ako isang tao na maninilbihan—sumisilong sa isang bahay—na ikinahihiya ko ang bahay na tinitirahan ko. Hindi ako ganoong klase ng tao… no matter what one says for or against any other administration, history will be the judge.”

AND THE SEARCH CONTINUES...

JOJO BINAY for President???

why will you vote for someone who doesn’t even care for his people whole-heartedly? i know that most of you know what happened to babies last may of 2008 at OSMAK. i also gave birth at OSMAK and then my baby died because of SEPSIS. do you know that the city government did not do anything to make us feel better and did not do anything to let us know what really happened? as in NOTHING! they did not even talk to us regarding what happened or what will happen to the hospital and to the officers during that time. the only reason why i found out that a lot of babies have died in the hospital was when i saw it on the news. we then talked to DOH and we were the ones to report that a lot of babies are dying in the hospital. if we didn’t do that i am sure that more babies will suffer and die. i remember that MR.BINAY called a meeting one day and we were fetched by a Makati van. we thought that they will be explaining to us what happened and what steps they will be doing to reprimand the people who did not do their jobs but instead they called us for a debriefing!! they asked each and every one of us to say what experiences we had in the hospital and what happened to our babies. doctors from Makati med were there and some city hall workers and MR.BINAY, of course (just to say that he is doing something). i was not satisfied with what was happening. i believe that they should talk to us about what really happened and what steps they are doing to fix the issue. i heard in the news that hospital officers are being suspended but that’s just it. for how long?, who are those officers?, and why they were suspended were not discussed. i approached MR.BINAY, thinking that he will talk to me in a nice and civilized way since he is a public figure, but to my surprise he was so boastful and too stiff. i just asked him if we will not be discussing anything legal. he told me in a very very very rude way that “aba iha kung gusto mo magdemanda, magdemanda ka at di ka namen uurungan.” i cried in front of many people. i felt devastated. Makati looks nice from the outside but inside it is not. the parents of the other babies who died are afraid to file legal charges against the hospital since most of them are working in the city hall and some of them are afraid of that guy. someone told me that he can do anything, as in anything and they are very afraid of him. i know that i am not alone in this battle. i know that all of the babies are on my side. to the parents of the babies who died at OSMAK i just hope that you come to your senses and fight for your rights. DO NOT VOTE FOR JOJO BINAY! he is arrogant and rude. if he cannot manage ONE HOSPITAL that is under him, how can he handle all the hospitals in the Philippines? if he was not able to give us details of what happened and to face the truth that they were not able to handle their responsibilities, how can he handle our country? if he is not honest enough to me and to the other parents, how can he be honest to all the citizens of our country? think again!…

Why is Bro. Eddie not included?

5

You invited new presidentiables. Bro. Eddie was included in the 2004 Presidential Elections, why did is he not invited? Or maybe you are afraid that he will perform better than the others like what he did at DONG PUNO LIVE and DEBATE with MARE at PARE last 2004?

I believe that he has the best action plan for the progress of the Philippines.

Who among the presidentiables...

1. slept with the workers during their rallies against abusive employers? - BRO. EDDIE

2. spend their youth fighting for the advancement of education among the state universities? - BRO. EDDIE

3. was imprisoned twice (2) during Marcos regime while taking his education at the UP College of Law in fighting for justice of our people? - BRO. EDDIE

4. has help the OFW's and led them to faith in the Almighty God in 42 countries? - BRO. EDDIE

Hope you won't stop the people from hearing and seeing a real patriotic Filipino in our midst today.

"The Filipino is worth living for"

IPALIWANAG

Ang kabataan ngayon dapat paliwanagan! Most issues today dumadaan lang.. ni walang explination kaming natatanggap at ni wala man lamang kahit titolo nalng nang issue hindi pinapalabas at pinapakita sa amin ni Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Sana mabigyan niyo po kami nang paliwanag...

TRUE EDUCATION

True Education can only be achieved if we are able to practice the things we have learned in school. It cannot be determined by how high your grades are... but how you practice the things you have learned and make yourself effective to your community and your country!

Love of God and Love of Country

Love of God and Love of Country

I do agree with those Former Pres. Erap Estrada! Its in those values tha twe are able to grasp and appreciate our identity as filipinos, and move us to to become better citizens of the country. If these faculties are put together then we will have that sense of Love of Famliy... The youth of today is lost, may the new elected individuals give us the right torch to overcome the night. May God Bless us all!

Standard of Education

TAMA MAYOR BINAY! Selective Justice! It doesn't happen only in the government, but at the same time our educational institutions... my concern here is still the problem between poor and rich, political views of different parties. Today in my own experience and judgement, parang natatakot tayo or we avoid political or social issues, most of our professors or people with great capabilities cease to inspire the generation today, not be too radical, but to atleast encourage us to be responsible and responsive to social or political situation of the country. We dont give due justice to our youth of today, why question that the generation today is so apathetic at the same time uninvolve, try to ask yourselves? Are we affirming and standing for the truth? are we giving our children the right answers to their questions?

Getting into politics again...

Not too keen on this batch...
I'm seeing trapos again.
I'm yet to watch on Sunday but seeing these people makes me think twice.
I have to be balance, maybe I should see it.
The initial forum was really interesting, Maybe I have chosen.
Hopefully, Sen. Gordon would really run and win.

Well, we still need to listen.

I am so happy to know that we

I am so happy to know that we still have very good possible leaders in the future. On the first forum, Chiz Escudero is completely out of my list for the reason that he does not have the character and deep understanding of our culture to push his progressive vision. Gordon and Mar came out the best. They have a clear vision of what needs to be done to move forward and a deep knowledge of our culture without having to be a dictator like Marcos. On the second forum, only Binay and Legarda are the ones added to my list. Binay has very concrete plans which I have not heard in most of our candidates. Possibly because of his experience in Makati. The reason why America is a developed country because all presidential candidates have a plan that they lay out during campaigns for the people to hear and vote upon. When a president is selected the only thing he does is to implement the plan and maybe make a few revisions but he has to go back to media and the people to explain why he made the revisions. In the second forum, you see how Estrada disrespect the rule of law. He does not follow the time limit, generalized plan and wary about some questions which I hate in candidates. Fernando same with Estrada, not a good communicator too. You definitely need to be a good communicator to be a president.

AMONG ED

Why should wait others to tell you, you should take a crack for the presidency? Masyado sigurista ata si AMONG ED. A leader should offer himself and show to his minions that he can move mountains and not wait the prodding of other people to tell you, "O takbo na, kaya mo na.!"

NICE FORUM

A commendable project by ABS-CBN for giving the electorate a chance to peek into the minds of the presidential aspirants particularly their stands on important national issues, their concrete plans of how they can improve the quality of lives of our countrymen. At least for now, it's one notch higher than the usual song and dance numbers our politicos can offer during campaign sorties.
