Cory's death sways Twitter, Google

MANILA - For many Filipinos, news of Cory Aquino's death came through the internet as Twitter users began flooding the "twittersphere" at 4 in the morning of Saturday (August 1).

Earlier posts were asking for confirmation, seemingly unwilling to believe that "Tita Cory" had passed away.

When the news finally sank in, the reactions came fast and furious even from those who weren't even alive during the first "People Power" in 1986.

There's a staggering number of people going on-line and paying tribute to former President Cory Aquino.

In Twitter trending, the words "Cory and Aquino" garnered point 0.17% of entries from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Meantime, the hashtag "Corazon and Aquino" were tweeted as much as 0.18% from 6 a.m. before it dropped to 0.12% at 9 a.m..

Furthermore, the former president made it to the top trending topics of twitter.com and twitscoop.com as the parade of condolences and messages of sympathy continued.

Actress KC Concepcion quoted singer Jose Mari Chan, who called Cory, "An inspiration to the Filipino woman. She was a devoted wife. She was a pillar of strength."

World-renowned singer Lea Salonga tweeted, "R.I.P. to a true Filipino hero. Love and light, President Corazon Aquino."

Even foreign twitterers such as kencook from Atlanta, Georgia says, "She did what many wanted done. Filipinos fight to stay free."

Meantime, other microblogging sites, such as plurk.com, also recorded a spike in the number of people talking about the passing of Tita Cory, while tumblr.com also produced these diverse results when "Cory Aquino" is typed in and searched for.

Even Google trends showed records that "Corazon Aquino" was the 40th most talked about topic on Saturday.     

Barely a day after the Aquino family went public about Tita Cory's death, the online community has blogs, video and image-sharing sites that churned out tributes to the country's first female president.

And with the technology available these days, maybe Twitter and other social networking sites have become an important part of forward after a loss.
