Groups set biggest run against corruption
Amidst all the controversy surrounding the use of the Pork Barrel and the Malampaya Funds, several groups led by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) are organizing a 3k and 10k run entitled, Freedom Run 2013: I am Free from Corruption. The run will be held on November 10, Sunday, 5am at the Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City. Now on its third year, Freedom Run 2013 is part of FNF’s It’s All About Freedom campaign that hopes to translate the complex concept of freedom into everyday language. Aside from FNF, other partner organizations that are helping in organizing this activity are the Kaya Natin! Movement for Good Governance and Ethical Leadership, Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats, Laguna Lake Development Authority and the Yes Pinoy Foundation.
“Through this run, we want to encourage every Filipino to make a concrete stand against graft and corruption in government. They should realize that the billions of pesos lost due to corruption can be used to provide better basic services in education and health care especially for marginalized sectors in different parts of the country.” said Jules Maaten, Country Representative of FNF.
“We are more than happy to support this run because we believe that our country will never be able to move forward unless we join and support our administration’s call to fight graft and corruption. One way of doing that is to ensure that those who are proven to have stolen public funds are immediately punished and sent to jail.” added former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, Chairman of the Kaya Natin! Movement.
Aside from Pangilinan, among the personalities who are expected to join the run are Senator Bam Aquino, Cong. Leni Robredo, Sec. Neric Acosta, QC Vice-Mayor Joy Belmonte, Noel Cabangon, Leah Navarro and Dingdong Dantes.
Organizers expect at least 4,000 freedom runners to join the event.
