Survey: Less registered businesses equals more unemployment

The result of the 2006 census of Philippine Business and Industry showed that the number of establishments with 20 or more workers in the Philippines fell between 2005 and 2006, resulting in loss of employment.
The National Statistics Office (NSO), which conducted the survey said there were only 21,217 establishments in 2006, a 19.7 percent fall from the 26,407 total in 2005.
The 2006 results showed that the number of these registered establishments have been sliding since 1999, the first time NSO conducted the survey. In 1999, there were 28,245 establishments.
Total employed workers in these establishments also declined to 2.632 million in 2006 from 2.741 million in 2005. In 1999, these companies were employing a total of 2.854 million workers.
Among sectors, the number of establishments in the manufacturing sector fell to 5,024 in 2006 from 6,554 in 2005 and 7,450 in 1999. Employment in these manufacturing companies also went down to 973,178 workers in 2006 from 1.026 million in 2005 and 1.09 million in 1999.
Despite its declining share, manufacturing remained the top sector in the survey, comprising 23.7 percent of the total number of establishments with at least 20 workers.
This was followed by the wholesale and retail trade sector with a share of 21.4 percent, and hotels and restaurants sector with 13.0 percent. Mining and quarrying recorded the lowest number of establishments.
Economy-wide, total revenue or total sales earned in 2006 reached P6.4 trillion, an increase of 3.3 percent from P6.2 trillion in 2005. Almost half of the total revenue was contributed by the manufacturing sector, with P3.2 trillion pesos.
These establishments paid a total of P511.1 billion in compensation to their workers in 2006, up by 6.5 percent from the 2005 figure of P479.9 billion.
