Power supply still thin in Luzon

MANILA, Philippines - Metro Manila and some parts of Luzon are no longer on a brownout "red alert" but power supply remains thin, according to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).

Engr. Carlito Claudio, deputy assistant chief technical officer of NGCP, told ABS-CBN News that Luzon currently has only 200 megawatts (MW) of power reserves.

Given this, he said a number of areas in Luzon may still experience rotating brownouts.

Claudio noted that power supply remains low because several generation plants, including the 460-megawatt (MW) Quezon power plant, the 600-MW Ilijian power plant and the 200-MW Calaca power plant, are undergoing maintenance.

Several areas of Metro Manila and Luzon were placed on a brownout "red alert" on Monday after a unit of the Sual coal power plant shut down due to feedwater pump trouble.

Meanwhile, NGCP assured that there won't be a power interruption come election day. Report from Alvin Elchico, ABS-CBN News
