MANILA, Philippines - The owners of the Genevieve Gozum boutiques are in trouble with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for allegedly evading income and value-added taxes amounting to P226.9 million.

The BIR on Thursday filed a tax case worth at least P226.9 million against Globe Mallow International Enterprises Corporation (GMIEC), which owns the Genevieve Gozum boutiques. Company officers were named as Genoveva M. Gozum and Gene M. Gozum.

The BIR discovered that GMIEC had underdeclaring its income and VAT by bloating its expenses and claiming false input VAT.

GMIEC claimed to have bought P223.42 million worth of items from Fine & Fancy Fabrics Center.

Fine & Fancy Fabrics Center denied having transactions with the company, and asked GMIEC to rectify its claims with the BIR. The GMIEC did not respond to the BIR when asked to explain the discrepancy.

The BIR assessed GMIEC’s total tax liability at P226.9 million, including surcharge and interest, that can be broken down to P60.69 million in VAT and P166.3 million in income tax.

GMIEC is facing charges for violating sections 254 and 255 of the National Internal Revenue Code or for evading taxes and failing to supply the BIR with correct and accurate information under section 256 of the NIRC.

At the same time, a petshop owner was charged for printing "official" receipts andcommercial invoices without authority from the BIR and for failing to issue duly registered receipts.

The BIR filed a case against Joycee Ann Jona Gapasin de Josep, owner of Bloomers Petshop and Clinic in Harrison Plaza, Manila.

The printing of unauthorized receipts is a violation of Section 264 of the NIRC.
