Maynilad, Manila Water want to raise rates
MANILA, Philippines - Water concessionaires Maynilad and Manila Water are asking the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for a rate hike as part of their rate rebasing scheme.
Maynilad wants to increase rates by P10.30/cubic meter, from the current P46.77 to P 47.07/cubic meter from July 2013 to 2017.
On the other hand, Manila Water is asking for a P5.83/cubic meter increase for the same rebasing period, meaning the current rate of P38.48/cubic meter will go up to P44.31/cubic meter.
But MWSS regulatory office deputy administrator Vincent Yambao clarifies the government will have to scrutinize whether or not the sought increases are justified.
The MWSS hopes to come up with a decision by July 2013.
Yambao explains the regulatory office will study Maynilad and Manila Water's targets or plans for 2013 up to 2017 and assess whether their expenses are worth it.
Yambao also assures consumers that for every increase that they will approve, this will redound to better service for the consumers.
Both Maynilad and Manila Water asked for an initial or provisional increase of 20% (Maynilad) and 2.5% (Manila Water) of its applied rate adjustment but the MWSS regulatory office has turned down the request.
