DOH: Doctors should issue official receipts

MANILA, Philippines - Health Secretary Enrique Ona yesterday backed calls for doctors to be required to issue official receipts for services rendered.

“I think most doctors are doing that. Good numbers are not and I think they should,” he said in an ambush interview.

Recently, the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) had decried a print advertisement of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) that depicted doctors as tax cheats.

The ad shows a teacher carrying a doctor on her shoulders. The ad also stated while the physician earned more than the teacher, the doctor paid less taxes.

Ona, however, refused to comment on the BIR’s apparent shame campaign against tax evaders. He said he was not affected by it.

“I’m not hurt because I’m paying my taxes. (BIR) commissioner Kim Henares is right when she says those who don’t pay tax should get hurt),“ he added in Filipino.

According to Ona, doctors could have taken offense with the advertisement because they also render free services.

“Doctors are sensitive. They think we do a lot of free services but these are not recognized and only our shortcomings are being publicized,” he said.
