The Department of Tourism (DOT) is endorsing more than P20 billion worth of investments in tourism projects for the year.
These investments include nine resorts, six hotels, two theme parks, and one condotel. According to the DOT, such projects are expected to generate 3,000 jobs and more than 2,000 in room capacity.
"With this initial list of investments, the country is assured of a vibrant tourism industry, with bigger revenues and more jobs. And consequently, these lead to developments in transportation and road infrastructures," Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said.
"Jobs generated from these projects are likewise foreseen to augment the rise in unemployment in these challenging times," added Eduardo Jarque Jr., DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions.
Upon registration with the Bureau of Investments, these endorsed projects can avail of an income tax holiday for four to six years, and duty-free importation of selected capital equipment for the operation of accommodations and facilities.
Some of the DOT-endorsed projects which were opened in the first quarter of 2009 include the Park Bed and Breakfast Hotel and Restaurant in Pasay City, Oakwood Serviced Residences in Pasig City, Imperial Palace Water Park Resort and Spa in Cebu, and the Shangri-La Resort and Spa in Boracay Island.
Seven DOT-approved resorts have also been launched in Palawan during the first three months of the year, which include the Sugihara Villa Resort, Vauban Villa Resort, Salamanca Villa Resort, Almonavides Villa Resort, Kapangyarihan Villa Resort, and La Pucelle Villa Resort - Amanpulo Group.
On the other hand, other projects endorsed by the DOT are set to be opened in the months ahead, which include the Discovery Bay Misibis, Manila Ocean Park (additional facilities), the Picasso Serviced Residences, Newport Marriot Hotel, Maxim's Hotel, Microtel Inns and Suite Puerto Princesa, and Silang Wakeboard Park.
Meanwhile, the endorsement of Bella Roca Island Resort and Spa in Marinduque is being processed by the DOT.
