Aquino shocked by SWS survey on rising poverty, hunger

MANILA, President - President Benigno Aquino expressed disbelief on Friday after a survey found that a growing number of people were experiencing hunger and poverty under his administration.

Aquino said the nationwide survey, conducted from March 4 to 7 by the respected Social Weather Stations research group, did not reflect the reports he was getting from government agencies and the business community.

"Why is it like this when the labor department says more people are getting jobs and the business community is reporting that they are hiring more people?" Aquino said to reporters.

"I cannot reconcile this," he added.

The survey found that 20.5% of respondents experienced hunger in the past 3 months while 51% considered themselves to be poor, according to the Social Weather Stations website.

This was a sharp reversal from the 15.9% who reported hunger and the 48% who rated themselves as poor in a similar survey conducted in September, 2010 -- the first since Aquino took office in June.

The Social Weather Stations, which surveyed 1,200 adults, did not say why the number of people who considered themselves poor and hungry was rising.

Aquino said the survey may have been "skewed" as it did not fully capture those who had benefited from a Brazilian-style government "conditional cash transfer" programme for the poor instituted earlier this year.

The cash transfers went to the 400,000 poorest families in less-developed areas of the central and southern Philippines but the survey relied mostly on respondents from Manila and surrounding areas, he said.

Aquino said an additional 1.3 million families would be added to the cash transfer programme in the coming weeks.

Shortly after Aquino took office, his government said he hoped to cut the number of people living on a dollar a day or less to 16% of the population by 2015.

Just over 23 million Filipinos -- or 26.5% of the population -- survived on P46.14 ($1.04) a day or less, according to a government survey in 2009.

Hindi ba nakikita ni Porsche-Noynoy ang sitwasyon ng bansa ngayon?

Maybe that's the answer.

WALA TALAGA SIYANG NAKIKITA.

Dear Pres. Aquino

It it my fervent wish that you would stop acting all innocent and surprised. It does nothing but confirm my suspicion that you are, indeed, living in a fantasy world.

How can the constant rising of prices of fuel, electricity and basic commodities not equal more hunger and more poverty? How can you not reconcile these facts? Are you seriously THAT dillusional?

Please wake up from the dream world you have created. It behooves no one for you to keep acting like all is good in the Philippines. Any more of your shenanigans and you may find yourself facing a peaceful revolution to have you kicked out of your seat as the head of state.

The truth

The President said the survey is flawed that is because he cannot handle the truth. He should start collecting all the monies that his crooked politicians have stolen from the good people of the Philippines and put into a program that feeds the poor and He should also stop looking so ignorant to what is going around behind him. The buck stops at his door.

Sabi mo pag walang corrupt walang mahirap

Kaya nga SABI mo lang 'yun. Marami paring mahirap kaya marami pa ring corrupt..umpisahan sa kabinete ng friendship at mababawasan ang mahirap.

Shocking ba

our president has never experienced poverty in his life. his closest experience could be just pictures on the newspapers, television programs or from reports from his men now that he's president. and of course during campaigns, he mingles with the masses and maybe occasionally he would venture in poor areas. the rising costs of living (housing included)simply eat up the meager income of most Filipinos - not even enough to provide three square meals for many. i think if corruption is reduced especially in the government sector and proper management of our natural resources poverty can be minimized if not reduced to nil. the two greatest contributing to poverty in our country is corruption and the ongoing insurgency by the leftist rebels and the muslim separatists in Mindanao. the Aquino government has so much to do to solve these problems.
