ADB says PH shouldn't rely on BPOs to create jobs
MANILA, Philippines - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is urging the Philippine government not to rely solely on the business process outsourcing industry to create jobs.
In the ADB-ANC Development Dialogues aired on Monday evening, ADB managing director Rajat Nag said BPO companies account for only 1% of the total labor force in the Philippines.
"We've got to recognize that BPOs provide only 1% of the employment," Nag said.
The government needs to have a business plan to revive the manufacturing sector, which will create the jobs the Philippines needs.
"The bulk of the growth in employment has to come from industry, has to come from manufacturing. We have to discuss how to make that shift. So this is not an either or. I think the services sector is important, BPO is important, but it will not be enough to create the jobs we need for inclusive growth," Nag said. - ANC
