The National Food Authority (NFA) said its rice sales remained high in the first three months of the year, exceeding the target for the period.

In a statement, the NFA said it was able to sell 8.9 million bags of rice in January to March, higher than its target of 8.7 million bags for the period.

The NFA noted that its sales during the first two months fell short of the monthly targets, but these were offset by the increase in sales in March.

At present, the NFA sells 147,986 bags of rice daily, taking up a 22 percent market share in Metro Manila.

"The government gives consumers a wide array of choices and varieties of rice that suit their budget. This and the assurance of available supply has greatly influenced their preference [for NFA rice]," NFA Administrator Jessup Navarro noted.

NFA sells rice for only P18.25 per kilo to Filipinos with family access cards issued by the Department of Social Welfare and Development and to those included in its rice allocation ledger.

Those with no family access cards can buy NFA commercial grade rice at P25 per kilo.
