Transport groups willing to slash jeepney fare

MANILA, Philippines - Transport groups are willing to further slash the minimum fare in public utility jeepneys (PUJ) if diesel prices continue to go down.

Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines (FEJODAP) president and incoming 1-UTAK congresswoman Zenaida Maranan said if diesel prices go down to P37 per liter, they will voluntarily cut another P0.50 in the minimum fare.

But Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations (ACTO), Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association and Liga ng Transportasyon at Opereytors sa Pilipinas (LTOP) leaders said diesel must be reduced to P35 or P36 per liter for them to bring down the minimum fare by P0.50, making it P7.50.

Transport groups want an assurance from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) that the fare must be adjusted too if diesel prices start to go up again in the future.

They lament that it is easy for them to lower fares, but will have to undergo many hearings before they can increase fares.
