SLEx operator defers implementation of toll hike
MANILA, Philippines - The South Luzon Tollways Corp. (SLTC) said on Tuesday it will defer the
implementation of its higher toll fees for motorists plying the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx).
SLTC said that instead of June 30, the toll hike will be imposed on July 7.
SLTC spokesperson Alma Tuason said the decision to put off the new toll charges for a week, is in
deference to President-elect Beningno Aquino III's inauguration on June 30.
Opposition to the hefty toll hike has been mounting since its approval by the Toll Regulatory Board
(TRB).
Aquino was also quoted as saying that he wants to review the toll hike.
Tuason said the SLTC is confident that the incoming Aquino administration will recognize the contract
that the government entered into in 2006 with SLTC, which is 80% Malaysian-owned.
She said SLTC intends to have a briefing with the new President on the contract, and he will be
provided with documents that proves the increase is justified.
In its earlier statements, the TRB said that preventing the SLTC from recovering their investment is a
breach of contract and the government may be forced to pay for the investor's lost profit as a result.
