DTI lists PH products with strong market potential in Europe

MANILA - The Trade department has drawn up a list of local products with strong market demand potential in Europe along with priority sectors for promotion in select European countries.

Documents obtained from the Department of Trade and Industry showed products being pushed for promotion in the European Union with strong marketable potentials are processed fruits and marine products, organic food, auto parts, high-end garments, giftware, home furnishings and business-process outsourcing (BPO) service.

The information, collected by the Bureau of Export Trade Promotion Group under the DTI, also listed 7 European nations with viable sectors for promotion.

For Germany, it is noted that there is a growing demand for bio-coconut products, as well as design-driven products such as furniture and houseware.

Garments and footwear were described as “the one sector that may defy slow prospects for the eurozone,” and identified Ariston Nord West Ring Schuh for shoes and Katag AG, as German firms that would like to explore suppliers from the Philippines.

“Fashion and costume jewelry are possible winners as interest was signified by Swarovski, a Switzerland-based firm with a strong presence in Germany,” the report noted.

Intellectual Property, BPO and Knowledge Process Outsourcing is considered a mainstay of promotional efforts to Germany, the report further said.

From Netherlands, there is a growing interest to source geotextiles from the Philippines, as well as fishery products, sporting and camping goods and medical devices.

Interest from France is strong in fashion accessories as the Philippines is regarded as a reliable supplier to European firms, the report noted. Dried tuna and processed fruits from the Philippines enjoy a stable demand as well from European importers.

In Belgium automotive parts, holiday items, and retirement and health services from the Philippines are sectors of particular interest, to name a few.

For Italy, products deemed to have promise are motor vehicle replacement parts such as ignition-wiring harnessses, belted rubber ties and motorcycle parts.

Eyeing local automotive parts and biofuel products, as well, are Spanish companies, according to the report.

The Swedish market would likely be receptive to organic food products, industrial workwear and canned foods.

Philippine exports to the European Union amounted to $6.5 billion in 2013, with the bulk of the exports being electronic microassemblies.

The top European imports from the Philippines in 2013, meanwhile, are airplanes and other aircraft and manufacturing materials. Total imports of Europe amounted to $ 6.2 billion in 2013.

In 2012 and 2013, Philippine exports and imports to the European Union expanded 10.56 percent and 34.7 percent, respectively.
