MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has released P2.94 billion to boost post-harvest efforts of the country's agriculture sector.

The funds will be used to support programs of the Department of Agriculture, including the National Rice Program, National Livestock Program, Organic Agriculture, and National Corn Program in building drying, milling, and processing facilities and purchasing equipment, including tractors, plows, dryers, and seed cleaners.

A total of P2,141,237,000 will be allotted for the National Rice Program while P556 million will be given to the National Corn Program.

Region XII, which includes the provinces of North Cotabato and Sarangani, will receive the largest share with P396.8 million while the Ilocos region will receive P321.9 million.

The disaster-prone Bicol region, which covers Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Masbate, will receive P284.4 million.

“Proper post-harvest facilities are key to the success of our banner agriculture programs. By giving our farming communities the necessary equipment and infrastructure, we can help make the post-harvest process much more efficient for them. This, in turn, will allow our farmers to preserve the quality of their crops and minimize the risk of post-harvest losses,” Budget Sec. Butch Abad said.

He added that key to boosting the local agri-industry is “building the capacity of our farmers towards greater productivity, as well as bringing more commercial opportunities to their respective communities.”
