Meralco: Most franchise areas wthout power

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Around 90 percent of Manila Electric Co.'s (Meralco) franchise area lost power on Wednesday as typhoon Glenda's strong winds toppled power lines and posts in the metropolis.

In an interview on ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda, Meralco spokesperson Jose Zaldarriaga said the southern portion of its franchise area experienced the most damage based on initial reports.

"Mas lumawak pa ang extent ng outage sa Meralco franchise areas. In fact, in terms of the demand, 90 percent ang nabawas sa kabuoang demand sa Meralco franchise area. In terms of the areas, ang southern portion talaga namin ang napakalaki ng extent ng damage based on our initial analysis," he said.


On its Facebook page, Meralco said the eastern and southern parts of Meralco's franchise area had no power as of Wednesday morning.

"Affected are major areas of Laguna, Cavite and Quezon provinces in the south as well as major portion of Rizal province including Binangonan, Morong, Tanay, Pililia and Jala-jala," the company said.

Zaldarriaga appealed to Meralco customers for understanding.

"Humihingi po kami ng pag-unawa sa aming mga consumers, napakatindi po kasi ng tumama sa amin, gayun din sa panig ng NGCP, transmission facilities, we also rely on that. I think that has also been affected," he said.

Meralco, he assured, will undertake clearing and repair operations in the affected areas as soon as possible.

"Sa mga lugar na di na mahangin, nagsisimula na kami... Patuloy ang efforts namin. We are going to conduct the clearing operations, mopping up, but we will have to make sure safe ang lugar bago ma-restore ang kuryente," Zaldarriaga said.

On Tuesday, Meralco said that in case of flooding in homes and establishments, the public is advised to do the following:

Ensure that the main electrical power switch or circuit breaker is off. Be sure to be dry at all times when in contact with any electrical facility.

Unplug appliances from wall sockets. Turn off permanently-connected equipment and unscrew all lightbulbs if possible.

Remove mud and dirt from service equipment or main circuit breaker/fuse and its enclosure using rubber gloves and rubber soled shoes.

Make sure that all electrical wires, connectors and other wiring devices are completely dry.

When all electrical wires and accessories have dried and are clean, the wiring system of all appliances must be checked by a licensed electrician. Do not turn on flood-damaged electrical appliances.
