MANILA - Two of the country's top telecommunications firms assured their subscribers that they will be able to use their prepaid mobile phone credits for a longer time starting this Sunday.

Smart Communications Inc. and Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc. (Sun Cellular) said they will follow the new guidelines set by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) regarding the extended shelf life of prepaid credits.

The new rules, as detailed in memorandum circular 03-07-2009, were set to be implemented by all local mobile phone firms starting July 19. The NTC said it will impose the necessary sanctions on any firm that fails to comply with the new guidelines.

The two companies said the NTC ruling will cover all regular prepaid credits, including their load-sharing services or "pasa load." However, they pointed out that their bucket-priced offerings such as unlimited calls and text promos will not be included in the extension.

Meanwhile, many subscribers are planning to buy prepaid credits on Sunday to enjoy longer load validity. Others, however, think that the NTC's new rules will not solve issues on missing prepaid credit and unsolicited text messages.

NTC should push and work harder...

I totally agree that NTC's new rules will not solve issues on missing prepaid credits and unsolicited text messages UNLESS load balance inquiry is free and load balance is automatically advised after each call or text sent by all prepaid subscribers and automatic accumulation of validity period on prepaid SIM upon reload just like other telecom companies in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the world. Excellent service to Filipino people not GREED for income should prevail. Instead of sending automatic spam messages to all prepaid subscribers, telecom companies should provide excellent features to improve their services. They are just trying to make all kinds of alibi because of their greed for income depriving cell phone users of their supposed excellent quality of services to the Filipino people. Tama na, sobra na! For NTC, you may wish to verify with your counterparts like Saudi Telecom (stc.com.sa) if this is true; that load balance inquiry is free; load balance is automatically sent after each call and text SMS sent; that automatic accumulation of validity period on prepaid SIM upon reload are software features that exist for telecoms for the past years. NTC should push and work harder to imposed a deadline to implement these features with our telecom companies.
