PLDT looks to serve more OFWs through expansion in US, Europe
HONG KONG - The international sales and marketing arm of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) is planning to expand its operations in the United States and Europe, a top company official revealed.
PLDT Global Corp. President Alejandro O. Caeg said his firm plans to launch telecommunications services in New York and New Jersey in the US, and in Spain and Italy in Europe.
“Given sufficient time and experience, we will deploy on the East Coast, depending on the phase of the market development. Soonest time is some time next year,” he said in a media briefing here.
The firm launched in June its mobile operations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, San Diego and Las Vegas, partnering with American telco T-Mobile for the launching of its services.
“We deemed that it’s probably about time that we penetrate the American market,” Caeg said.
Operations in Europe will also be expanded to include Spain and Italy, both of which have dense population of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
“We are very much interested in the European market, specifically Spain, which has around 50,000 OFWs, and Italy with 400,000 Filipinos,” he said. “These are markets that we are looking at and we have been discussing with some of telco operators in the said countries for future tie-ups.”
Caeg added that the Middle Eastern market is slowly opening up, with some providers sounding off their interest in partnering with the Filipino telco.
Along with the baring of the expan-sion plan, the firm expects to grow its revenues by double-digit from $50 million as of end-2013.
“The US market will be a very big chunk of that, and also the expansion of our service offerings to include exclusive mobile content,” Caeg said.
Apart from legacy mobile services, PLDT Global now provides relevant Filipino-centric services such as the reloadable mobile wallet that allows subscribers to send remittance at affordable rates.
The service also allows live streaming of Philippine TV with Smart Pinoy TV and the sending of gifts and payment for utilities in the Philippines through the Smart Pinoy Store. Subscribers will also have access to e-magazines from popular Philippine publishing companies and e-books.
US-based subscribers may also avail themselves of PLDT HOME services such as landline and DSL services for their families and relatives in the Philippines.
PLDT Global is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that rides on the physical network infrastructure of other carriers to provide telecommunications services for a specific market.
It has five core businesses, namely, MVNO, international dealership, e-commerce, remittance and enterprise business.
Aside from the US, PLDT Global has established its presence in the following countries: Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, Malaysia, Guam and Macau.
