MANILA, Philippines - State-run National Power Corp. and Belgian firm Enfinity are planning to build small capacity solar power plants in different parts of the country.

Napocor president Froilan Tampinco said the facilities, with minimum capacity of 10 megawatts each, will be located in Romblon, Palawan and Quezon as part of the government's Small Power Utilities Group or SPUG program.

Napocor is mandated under the Electric Power Industry Act (EPIRA) to ensure power supply in SPUG areas.

The firm has been talking with various renewable energy firms for its SPUG projects.

Enfinity, for its part, is aggressively expanding its presence in the Philippines.

The company, which is one of Europe's largest energy producers, had earlier announced plans to put up a 50 to 100-MW solar plant in the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga.

Aside from Enfinity, Napocor is also talking with US-based Clenergen and Enertine for possible biomass energy projects.
