MANILA, Philippines - The government is likely to award import rights for the full 100,000 tons of sugar it was seeking at an auction on Friday after traders submitted bids totalling nearly 130,000 tons, a government official said.
Rosemarie Gumera, vice chairman of the state auction committee, said the sugar imports should arrive not later than September 15.
Traders said bulk of the imports were likely to be sourced from Thailand, with a small volume coming from Guatemala. Government officials had previously said the sugar might be sourced from Brazil.
