MANILA -- West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. was the lone winner from the Philippines in the first Lions Health Awards held in Cannes, France, when its anti-dengue mosquito trap won a bronze.

Part of the Palais des Festivals, Lions Health is the world’s largest healthcare communications awards. In its debut year, it gathered over 1,400 entries and awarded only 66 Lions.

Maynilad’s anti-dengue mosquito trap is a do-it-yourself project designed to help curb dengue cases in poor communities.

The company partnered with the Department of Health and Y&R Philippines for the project, which helps exterminate mosquitoes using items commonly found in households—a recycled plastic bottle with a mixture of clean water, brown sugar and yeast. The mixture produces carbon dioxide that attracts mosquitos, trapping them in the bottle and killing them. The device can kill hundreds of mosquitos within a period of two weeks before the mixture requires replacement.

Dengue is a leading cause of childhood hospitalizations in the Philippines. In the National Capital Region alone, a total of 1,608 cases were recorded by the Department of Health from January 1 to July 2 this year.

“Dengue is among the common diseases during the rainy season. With this project, we want to empower people in the fight against this disease through a simple, low-cost solution. We are honored that our efforts have been recognized by the international healthcare communications community,” Maynilad president and CEO Ricky P. Vargas said in a statement.
