IBP: BIR can't require lawyers to post fees in offices
MANILA, Philippines - The Integrated Bar of the Philippines is opposing the Bureau of Internal Revenue's plan to require self-employed professionals, including lawyers, to post their rates in their offices.
In an interview with ANC, IBP president Vicente Joyas said it would be unethical for lawyers to post their fees in their offices.
"If you're going to be forced to place in your law offices the rates or fees, that would amount to advertisement which is not allowed among lawyers. That is unethcial and may subject lawyers to possible administrative action," he said.
BIR Commissioner Kim Henares earlier said it will issue a new memorandum to require doctors, lawyers and other self-employed professionals to post their fees in their offices.
She said the move will encourage professionals to be more transparent and avoid overcharging their clients.
"This is more yung mga consultation fee. Kasi madaming nagrereklamo na pag sinisingil sila humihingi kayo ng resibo tataas ho yan ng 12 percent minimum dahil ho sa VAT. So pag nakalagay na ho yan (fees) alam na nila eto yung charges nila," she told DZMM.
