Transport group revives jeepney fare hike petition
MANILA, Philippines - Transport group ACTO is seeking to revive their petition to increase jeepney fares to P10.
On Monday, ACTO filed a motion for the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board to immediately hear their fare hike petition, which was filed in August 2012 and has since been archived.
Efren de Luna, head of ACTO, said it is time to increase basic jeepney fares to P10 for the first 5 kilometers due to the successive oil price increases. The average price of diesel is now P45.35 per liter.
De Luna noted that minimum wage earners will have a P10 increase by the end of the month.
ACTO also expects other transport groups to follow suit.
But the National Council for Commuters Safety and Protection said a P2 increase in basic jeepney fares is exorbitant.
NCCSP Elvira Medina said increasing jeepney fares to P10 is like taking away the meager wage increase of workers. The move is also untimely due to the upcoming holiday season.
Medina also reacted to the report that transport groups will join the mass demonstration against pork barrel on September 11 (Wednesday). She said if transport groups will refuse to ply their routes, the NCCSP will file appropriate charges against them.
