MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Justice (DOJ) scheduled the first hearing of the preliminary investigation into tax evasion charges against former Chief Justice Renato Corona, his daughter, Carla, and son-in-law, Dr. Constantino Castillo III at 2 p.m. on September 25.

The subpoenas will be sent out today by the investigating panel composed of Senior Asst. State Prosecutor Roseanne Balauag, chairperson, and Prosecution Attorneys Roland Estepa and Javee Laurence Bandong, members.

Complainant Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) alleged that Corona owes government P120.5 million in taxes. His daughter's alleged income tax liability was reported at P9.93 million, while Castillo's alleged tax liability amounts to P20.25 million.

In a statement, Corona said he will respond to the charges and abide by the processes, "as a man of the law."

Corona also said the charges may just be government's ploy to "divert public attention from certain issues that are becoming too hot to handle."

"By the grace of God, we will overcome. This, too, will come to pass," he said.
