PCCI urges businesses to stay open in Zamboanga
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry made an appeal to businesses in areas not affected by the standoff in Zamboanga City to continue their operations.
"Based on the assessments of our regional and provincial PCCI officials in Mindanao, the crisis is contained in Zamboanga City... The police and the military, likewise, have taken proactive steps to prevent the spread of the crisis in other areas," said Miguel B. Varela, PCCI president.
Varela said the PCCI officials in the area have consulted with Zamboanga crisis management committee, as well as police, military and community leaders.
"Aside from the consultations, our officials have also validated through their own observations and site visits that security outside the affected areas has been heightened to ensure that commercial offices, banks, telecommunications companies, shopping malls, factories, the airport and ports are safe,” said Varela.
He said coordination and networking with local government officials, national agencies, and peacekeeping officials are ongoing.
On Monday, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines extended the suspension of Zamboanga Airport operations through 21 due to the current security situation in Zamboanga.
