Rice self-sufficiency target will be met this year - DA
MANILA, Philippines - Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala insists that the country will become self-sufficient in rice by year-end.
This comes amid activists' calls for Alcala's resignation.
"Napaka-confident ko po na ma-hihit natin yun sufficiency level by the end of the year," said Alcala in an interview on ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda.
Agriculture Assistant Secretary Romeo Recide earlier testified before a house committee hearing that rice production will only reach 18 million metric tons this year, 3 million short of the 21 million metric tons the country has to produce to be self-sufficient.
But Alcala said that Recide made a mistake in his computation.
Alcala also said that the "palay" harvest for the last quarter of the year will ensure the year-end target will be met.
"Ang pinakamalaking harvest ng palay ay itong last quarter of the year," said Alcala. - ANC
