MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom, Inc. has launched its first LTE-powered roaming service in Hong Kong, the telco said in a statement on Tuesday.

Through its partnership with China Mobile Hong Kong Company Limited, Globe Telecom postpaid subscribers in Hong Kong with roaming services will be able to enjoy high-speed LTE (Long-Term Evolution, a 4G technology) connection they currently enjoy in the Philippines.

Globe Telecom said its LTE roaming service is the first of its kind to be offered by a Philippine telco.

After Hong Kong, Globe Telecom is looking at launching an LTE roaming service in South Korea next, through a partnership with SK Telecom.

"The company leverages on our strong partnership with the two carriers to make the LTE data roaming experience seamless for our postpaid subscribers who will be the first to access the superior browsing experience from this service," Ernest Cu, Globe president and chief executive officer, said in the statement.

In the coming months, Globe Telecom hopes to also launch the same service in Australia, Singapore, US, Japan, Canada, and the Middle East.

Globe Telecom launched its 4G (fourth generation) technology in the Philippines in 2009 with the WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). It beefed up its network with the launch of another 4G technology, HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access) last year, and LTE in September.

The firm's LTE network currently covers 45 sites in Makati City and Globe Telecom plans to expand this to cover other areas in Manila, Cebu, and Davao.
