MANILA, Philippines - Smart Communications Inc. further expanded its LTE coverage to reach areas in north, central and south Metro Manila, the telco said on Thursday.

The new technology is now available in SM Southmall in Las Pinas; Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan; schools UP Diliman, Ateneo De Manila University, and Miriam College in Quezon City; and Sikatuna Village and Eastwood Mall in Quezon City, said Lloyd Manaloto, Head for Smart broadband internet and data services.

LTE or Long Term Evolution, a 4G technology, provides the user faster Internet connection as compared to the current 3G and HSPA+ technology currently in place.

"With 10 cities now powered by our super-charged broadband service, we have more than doubled our coverage since the commercial launch less than two months ago," Manoloto said.

The telco launched its LTE service in August and coverage also reaches areas in Makati, Taguig, Mandaluyong, Pasig, Pasay, Muntinlupa and Manila.

Rival Globe Telecom Inc. launched its own LTE service in September covering 45 sites in Makati City. The Ayala-led firm plans to expand this to cover other areas in Manila, Cebu, and Davao.
