4 SM malls assigned as voting precincts
MANILA – Four SM malls will be turned into special polling precincts for Monday’s barangay elections.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said the malls have been assigned as voting precincts to address the needs of senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Elderly and differently abled voters from Barangay 659 can vote in the designated accessible polling place in SM City Manila, those from Barangay Sabang in SM City Lipa, those from Barangay Mabolo in SM City Cebu and those from Barangay Lagao in SM City General Santos, the Comelec said.
“As required by law, all the qualified voters from the identified areas were consulted by the Comelec and have given their consent to vote in the assigned precincts,” the Comelec said, citing Republic Act 19633.
The four malls will accommodate voters only from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
RA 10633 allows the Comelec to establish special polling places in places of buildings "that meet the requirements on accessibility. "
This project, now on its pilot execution, was approved during the en banc session last October 18.
“The introduction of the accessible voting places in this year's barangay elections will likewise be a prelude for its full implementation in the 2016 national elections,” the statement said.
