Oil price caps may cause supply problems: BSP
MANILA - The government should think twice before imposing a price cap on oil as this may create supply-related problems in the future, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) warned.
According to BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo, a price cap on oil may only distort market conditions and discourage suppliers. He stressed that there is no need for such price cap since inflation is seen to remain tempered this year and in 2010.
"We need to be careful of these schemes [price caps]. At this point, it may seem to be necessary, but it will affect availability of supply in the market in the long run," Guinigundo said in a briefing.
For the full year, the government is targeting to keep inflation within a range of 2.5% and 4.5%. On the other hand, the rise in consumer prices is expected to be kept between 3.5% and 5.5%.
Malacanang has earlier issued Executive Order 839, which requires oil firms to cap prices of their products at levels seen as of October 15 until Luzon is no longer under a state of calamity.
Officials said the move was aimed at worsening the effects of recent storms on prices of basic commodities.
BSP
BSP Ayaw Tumulong Sa Bayan
