MANILA, Philippines - Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) assured its customers that there would be continuous supply of electricity when Filipinos celebrate New Year's eve with their families and loved ones.

Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco's external communications manager, said the company has preparatory measures in place should their facilities get affected by pyrotechnics and firecracker explosions.

Still, Zaldarriaga discouraged the public from using firecrackers and pyrotechnics near Meralco facilities, particularly electric lines and transformers, since these may cause power interruptions and start fires.

"To ensure safety, people should remember that firecrackers and pyrotechnics near electric facilities is a dangerous mix," he said in a statement released on Monday.

Meanwhile, Zaldarriaga advised customers to call Meralco's customer service number (16211) in case of emergencies.

"Our call center is ready to respond to customers' needs at any given time. Its service is available 24/7," he said.
