TOKYO - The Japanese bullet train Hayabusa began running Saturday at a new maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour on the Tohoku Shinkansen line, faster than any other operating train in the country.

The E5 series train, which features a trademark long nose, operates on the line linking Tokyo with Shin-Aomori Station in Aomori on the northern tip of the country's biggest main island of Honshu.

It reaches the maximum speed between Utsunomiya, capital of Tochigi Prefecture, and Morioka, capital of Iwate Prefecture.

The Hayabusa bullet train raised its maximum speed from the previous 300 km per hour Saturday when its operator East Japan Railway Co. revised its service schedules.

It covers a distance of 714 km between Tokyo Station and Shin-Aomori Station in two hours and 59 minutes, 11 minutes faster than before.
