Liew Siaw Hsia, who gave birth to a baby boy on AirAsia Flight AK 6506 from Penang to Kuching has decided to name her child after the airline, calling him Asia Liew Ya Hang.
‘Ya Hang’ which means AirAsia in Mandarin, is the best name I can give my son who was the first baby born in the airline’s plane,” said Liew Siaw Hsia.
The mother and baby “AirAsia” are currently at the Putrajaya Hospital in Malaysia.
Asia Liew Ya Hang was safely delivered on board Flight AK 6506 on Oct. 21, 2009, when the aircraft was 2,000 feet in the air. The flight from Penang to Kuching was diverted to the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal in Sepang when Liew Siaw Hsia went into birth pangs prematurely. On board the flight was Dr. Ronald Tang, who promptly delivered little “AirAsia.”
Dr. Tang, who is based in Bintulu, Sarawak, was assisted by the airline’s flight attendants, who instantaneously rendered essential support and ensured Ms. Liew’s comfort. Mother and child were rushed to the Putrajaya Hospital upon landing.
To celebrate the first birth on board one of its flights, AirAsia has presented Ms. Liew and Baby AirAsia free flight tickets for life. As a token of appreciation to Dr. Tang, AirAsia has decided to present him two return tickets to any destination flown by AirAsia.
AirAsia’s Director of Operations Moses Devanayagam thanked Tang for giving Ms. Liew "the best care on board the flight. We are very privileged to have had him on board.”
Dr. Tang, in turn, praised the AirAsia crew for their competency in handling the situation.
"AirAsia’s staff did a great job in handling the situation. They were very efficient and helpful. The staff has done something really significant by comforting, reassuring and accompanying the mother at all times. The delivery was blessed with no complications. The mother and baby were safe and immediately transferred to the hospital upon landing. Everything was smooth and efficient. Well done to all!”
