Thailand bans cosmetic castration of minors

BANGKOK - Thai health authorities said Wednesday they were banning "cosmetic castrations" of underage boys, after parents complained about teenagers seeking out the operation as a first step toward a sex change. Thailand last week imposed a total ban on the procedure pending a review by a medical board. Under the new rules, boys under 18 will only be allowed to receive castrations to treat medical conditions, such as cancer.

Pet duck gets protection order from local gov't in NY

NEW YORK - A pet duck named Circles, shot and wounded by a neighbor with a pellet gun, has received an order of protection to keep it safe, the first duck in New York state's Suffolk County to benefit from such an order. Circles was in its owner's backyard on Long Island -- long known as a habitat for wild waterfowl -- when it was shot by a neighbor through the neck, said Michelle Auletta, prosecutor at the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

Thai PM raps fortune teller for predicting his fall

BANGKOK - Thailand's combative prime minister has lashed out at a famous fortune teller for predicting his new government's downfall in another military coup, local press reported Monday. The fortune teller last week predicted that the coalition government led by Samak Sundaravej would collapse in the coming months, resulting in political chaos and possible bloodshed, the English-language Bangkok Post and Nation newspapers reported.

Bees attack runners, 30 hospitalized

TOKYO - A swarm of bees attacked half-marathon runners in southwestern Japan on Sunday, forcing 30 people to be rushed to hospital, rescuers said. During the race in Saga city, athletes were set upon by the bees as they ran near a river bank, according to one of the local fire departments which dispatched five ambulances because of the incident.
