Salamat Dok: Energy Boosters for Summer
It’s hot! You’re lazy to move around. You feel sleepy, tired, and weak. You need to do something. Why not have an energy booster!
Interviewed by our Segment Host, Sol Aragones, Dr. Willie Ong, an ardent volunteer doctor of Salamat Dok, an Internist and Cardiologist, says, “During summer we sweat more and get dehydrated easily especially the elderly and athletic.”
To re-energize and re-invigorate the body, Dr. Ong recommends the following food and drinks to perk up your day.
Some of the health benefits of this tropical fruit are:
- Natural alkaline water which helps restore our body’s natural pH (potential hydrogen) balance important for overall health
- B-Vitamins which are good for cell metabolism
- Electrolytes – minerals which keep the body functioning efficiently
Milk is packed with vitamins and minerals that’s why it is considered as a complete food source. It is filled with nine essential nutrients beneficial to our health. Among them are phosphorous which help the body regenerate energy and riboflavin that convert food into energy.
Who doesn’t love chocolates? Whether it’s dark or brown, this handy snack is not only an immediate answer to hunger but a sure-fire energy booster for its stimulant properties.
Dr. Glen Davison, researcher in exercise physiology and nutrition at the University of Kent says, “Chocolate works on the central nervous system and reduces feelings of fatigue and increase alertness.”
If you want instant energy, grab a banana. It has natural sugars and potassium – an electrolyte which is often lost due to excessive sweating.
Bananas are one of the few fruits that contain both complex and simple carbohydrates necessary to envigorate your body.
The tree of life is also a source of “universal water” – coconut water! It is a powerful rehydrating agent when you are engaging in physical activities and of course during hot weather.
Not only is it a good source of vitamins and minerals, coconut water also has medicinal properties -- it washes out toxins from the body.
This favorite dish by young and old is a very good source of carbohydrates – a main source of energy.
If you are conscious about glucose content, you may choose whole wheat pasta or white noodles made from enriched flour.
The lycopene content of tomato sauce is an antioxidant that prevents you from heart disease and cancer. Other ingredients are also loaded with vitamins and minerals.
Eggs are considered as super food. It’s a common ingredient in the kitchen, not only because it’s affordable but it’s also easy to cook and easy to squeeze in our lunch boxes.
