If you're in Manila, there’s no need to go far when you want to have a wakeboard-riding fix!

Just a short drive from Manila is the beautiful Nuvali complex in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, where the sprawling new Republic Wakepark, also known as "The Republic"  is located.

The Republic is another project completed by Philippine wakeboard pioneer, Camarines Sur Governor LRayVillafuerte. This is to bring the sport closer to more enthusiasts based in Metro Manila and near northern provinces.

The opening of The Republic saw the country's top riders in action as they battled it out in the 6th Philippine Wakeboard Nationals.

Pros from around the world came to show off their mad skills and to serve as judges for the competition. The panel of judges included no less than wakeboard guru Mauricio Abreu of Brazil.

World-class riders were also present to declare it as their brand new playground.

Among the top riders present was pro rookie of the year awardee Shawn Watson from the US. One of the most innovative and flamboyant riders in the world, Shane Bonifay, was also present. The two led an awesome cast of some of the planet's most awesome board mavericks.

The nationals followed the World Wakeboard Association rules. Riders were judged on the technical difficulty, intensity and proficiency of their tricks, and the variety and combination of execution. They also earn points based on their use of the different obstacles and the fluidity of their run.

Pro riders from the US, Australia, Korea and Thailand were at hand to show off their big bad bag of wakeboard tricks. This sport doesn't only take passion and the guts to risk your limbs in coming up with high-flying tricks. It also takes a certain kind of madness to perfect their mad gravity-defying skills.

In the women's open finals, Elisabeth Fuchs edged Samantha Bermudez for the crown. Louise Meriguet rounded up the top three.

Crowned as the Pinoy king of wakeboarding was Carlo dela Torre, who edged out defending pro wake champ Edwin Tipones. Third place went to Julio Villafuerte.
