Multi-sport races have nowadays become a trend for seasoned athletes and weekend warriors who want to level up and test their endurance. The sprouting of different venues has pushed more and more beginners to give it a try and gear up for a yearlong series of exciting races.

Last October, over 500 competitive racers and beginners alike measured up to the test of the 1st Rudy Project Challenge in Nuvali, an AyalaLand development in Laguna. It was supposed to be a swim-bike-run race, but due to safety reasons, organizers decided to turn it into a duathlon race.

It was shorter, but it still was a grueling thrill for everyone.

Like true sportsmen, the triathletes who joined the race were still game to challenge themselves with the new course.

The first leg was a six-kilometer run, where participants were first given a taste of Nuvali's exciting hilly roads.

From the short run portion, duathletes transitioned for the 30-kilometer bike leg.  National duathlon team member Rubeno Javier was the first to finish his run, followed closely behind by 2008 ITU World Cup champion Matthieu O'Halloran and 2012 Ironman 70.3 Philippines' Pinoy Elite champion August Benedicto.

Racers pedaled around Nuvali’s killer hills. For participants, this was the best spot to test their leg power. Benedicto was the first to complete the bike portion, followed one second behind by Javier and O'Halloran.

The final three-kilometer run was the deciding lap for the three champs. They all sprinted at full speed but it was Canadian coach O'Halloran who prevailed in the last few meters.

As most weekend warriors grabbed their respective age group podium crowns, beginners savored their first taste of sufferfest.

Along with celebrity triathletes like Matteo Guidicelli, Kim Atienza, Gab Valenciano and Billy Joe Crawford, the duathlon participants showed that completing a multi-sport race may be hard, but it is doable, as long as you can endure the pain and know how to have a grand time!
