Gospel for September 19, 2008, Friday
1st Reading: 1 Cor 15:12–20
Gospel: Lk 8:1–3
Jesus walked through towns and countryside, preaching and giving the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve followed him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and diseases: Mary called Magdalene, who had been freed of seven demons; Joanna, wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward; Suzanna and others who provided for them out of their own funds.
Commentary
Jesus’ relationship with women such as Mary Magdalene and the others mentioned in today’s scripture was without compare in His day and age. Jesus would associate with people without distinction between gender, race or class.
Jesus comes to save all people, and will let nothing stand in His way. In fact, Mary Magdalene would become the first witness of the resurrection, and would become known as the Apostle to the Apostles. Her memory is honored to this day in the liturgical calendar of the Church, for she is a model for us of faithfulness and a willingness to share the Good News with others.
