MTRCB suspends 'Showtime' over Osang's remarks

MANILA, Philippines - The Movie & Television Review & Classification Board (MTRCB) on Monday placed the ABS-CBN talent show "Showtime" on a 20-day preventive suspension, after an incident involving one of the show's judges.

During a live show last January 7, judge Rosanna Roces made controversial statements against the show's teachers and co-judge Vice Ganda.

In the episode, Roces encouraged students who guested on the show to ask questions from their teachers. She went on to describe teachers as "repeaters."

"Huwag kayo makukuntento sa mga itinuturo ng libro at ng teacher. Kung magtatanong kayo, hindi masama iyon. Dahil ang mga teacher, they were just repeaters. Tinuturo lang nila kung ano ang itinuro sa kanila. Hindi na nila itinuturo kung ano ang gusto malaman ng mga bata," she said.

(If you ask questions, that's not bad. Because teachers, they were just repeaters. They just teach what was taught to them. They don't teach what the children want to know.)

Her co-judge on the show, Vice Ganda, later reminded the audience that there are many teachers who are good at their profession, and that people should not generalize when they criticize the failures of educators.

Osang removed but show still suspended

On January 8, the show then announced that Roces has been removed as a judge of the show, as part of the network's self-regulation.

Despite this, the MTRCB slapped Showtime with a 20-day preventive suspension.

The network will question the need for the preventive suspension of the show, after the removal of Roces as judge.

"A preventive suspension is issued to stop further violations, if there were any committed, or for the interest or welfare of the public. Thus, the network questions the need for said preventive suspension when Rosanna Roces has already been removed from the program," a statement released by the ABS-CBN Corporate Communications department said.

"Showtime is a highly entertaining show watched by many Filipinos. It helps promote and showcase the creativity and talent of kapamilyas nationwide, uplifts their spirit and provides opportunities to improve their lives," it added.

The cast and staff of the show said they were not given any notice of the suspension.

ABS-CBN will file an appeal in court on Tuesday, while a hearing is scheduled on January 14 to let the show air their side of the story on the MTRCB decision.

Teachers commend MTRCB

Meanwhile, the Teachers' Dignity Coalition said that while they are "saddened" by the suspension of the top-rating show, they commend the swift action by the MTRCB on Roces's infraction.

"While we are saddened by the the suspension of ABS-CBN's top rating show, Showtime, and we sympathize with the production staff & hosts of said program, we commend MTRCB's swift action on derogatory & condemnable remarks made by Rosanna Roces to teachers in its segment aired last January 7," a statement from Benjo Basas, TDC chair, said.

"We urge TV personalities to be sensitive to the different sectors and to general public in their entrtainment. This is no different frm racist comments against Filipinos in shows & papers abroad," it said.

Meanwhile, a new show, entitled "Magpasikat," will temporarily replace Showtime in its noon timeslot starting Tuesday. With a report from Mario Dumaual, ABS-CBN News

mtrcb too sensitive,

ganito naba sa pilipinas ngayon? hinde ka pwedeng mag opinion sa education sa pilipinas, kung ako ang masusunod i actually would commend osang for what she said, it was straight to the point when it comes to the way teachers teach in this country. there was nothing wrong in what she said. she had the right to express her opinions, we do have freedom of speech the last time i checked. Ang mali lang doon ay masyado syang naging emotional dahil sa past experience nya kaya nilahat nya ang mga teachers which is a wrong approach at hindi nya naisip ang magiging reactions ng mga teachers BUT vice ganda had corrected it and she did apologize dahil sigurado ren naman na hindi nya sinasadya na idamay ang mga ibang teachers because of what she said is just her opinion towards the education system. I mean lets be honest hindi lahat ng teacher are angels, masakit aminin na meron talagang ganun na nangyayari sa ibang tao at hindi lang den teachers ang gumagawa noon.

Ms. Roces' Trash Remarks

The comments made by Rosanna Roces were very uncalled for. I have so much respect for teachers and I wouldn't allow to let these things pass unnoticed. Well, on the stature of Ms. Roces, everything should just be taken in stride. Dignifying "trash" remarks from a "nobody" is such a waste of time. But i owe it to myself and my former mentors to give a piece of my mind on the matter. Who is Ms. Roces anyway? And what has she accomplished compared to the educational attainment and trainings of teachers. Freedom of speech and a privilege to become a juror in a show doesn't give her the right to malign or belittle anybody - educated or otherwise. It only showed the breath of her understanding and her obvious lack of breeding. It was a clear manifestation of how she was raised up by her parents - who unfortunately are her first "teachers", right? Anyway... too much emotions have been shed. I made researches and found a write-up that I would like to share with Ms. Roces... (if she knows the language and the article is not beyond her comprehension). Ms. Roces, if you need an intepreter or a person that can explain this fully, please refer to any teacher near you and I'm sure she will be kind and knowledgeable enough to do you a big favor.... This is the answer to your question (which apparently you're not also aware of) that started it all... FYI, Ms. Roces, if the entire article is beyond your limited intelligence, I will just give you the essence "PROTACIO" IS NOT JOSE RIZAL'S MIDDLE NAME BUT A SECOND NAME. Tsk! Tsk! And you're supposed to be full of knowledge huh... the truth is, you don't even know what you're talking about, girl! Can i for once "trash" talk too??... "MS. ROCES, NAGDUDUNONG-DUNUNGAN KA, EH BOBO KA PALA!!" There... Whew!!

"Jose Rizal's full name was José Protasio Mercado y Alonzo Realonda.

At a glance at the ancestral tree, which Professor Austin Craig has traced for us, showed where Baby José came by all but two of his names. If the usual custom had been followed, the babe, when he became a man would have signed his name José Mercado". The name "Mercado" had been given to José's great-grandfather by their Chinese great-great-grandfather Lam-co in 1731, and again in 1850 the Spanish Governor General Claveria had decreed that "Mercado" should be the family name. His Excellency the Governor General had, indeed, been pleased to grant names, new and old, to a vast number of families. For example, he had added the name "Realonda" to the family of José's mother.

But it happened that José's father was a man of independent thought. To be called "Mercado", which means "market", struck him as inappropriate for a farmer. He might never have thought about it if the Governor General had not called his attention to this incongruity. But now that orders had come saying that he should be named "Mercado", Francisco decided that he should not! He adopted the word "racial", which means "green field", changed the spelling to "Rizal", and gave his children that name, just for the sake of his independent soul and his sense of fitness. Perhaps, too, José's second name "Protasio" was as near to "protesto" as he thought wise to spell it. Francisco's independent spirit, which his sons and daughters inherited, did not get him into trouble that time, but it did later." x x x

beh buti nga

:)

was this the second violation?

i was browsing and i found a thread saying na its the second time na daw na may ganitong nangyari sa showtime kaya inilagay na yung show under preventive suspension, one was january 4, tapos yung isa nung january 7. is this true? ano meron ng january 4?

unfair

MTRCB IS SO UNFAIR FOR SUSPENDING THE SHOWTIME PROGRAME OF ABS-CBN. THEY SUSPEND THE SHOIW WITHOUT ANY DUE PROCESS AT ALL. MTRCB LOOKS LIKE BIAS IN MAKING DECISIONS.. CHAIR WOMAN LAGUARDIA PLEASE BE FAIR IN DOING YOUR JOB. CHAIRWOMAN LAGUARDIA, ANG KASALANAN NG ISA AY HINDI KASALANAN NG LAHAT.. DONT TAKE IT AS A GENERAL! NAPAALIS NA NGA SI OSANG EH. HINDI KASALANAN NG SHOW NA MAGBITAW NG GANUNG MGA SALITA SI OSANG. OVER ACTING ANG MTRCB TO DO THE SUSPENSION OF THE SHOW. SANA NAMAN PO AY IPATAWAG NYO MUNA YUNG MANAGEMENT BEFORE DOING SUCH DECISION NA BIGLAAN AY WALANG KATUTURAN AT ALL.AS A STUDENT I RESPECT ALL THE TEACHERS BUT ITS OSANG'S FAULT NOT THE SHOW!

I will do my best to do my part as a first time voter.

Be PROUD - You are a TEACHER

No matter what they say! Be Proud You are a TEACHER! The failure of few teachers should not be treated in general. They sacrificed enough for our children, pinupunuan po nila kung anuman yung hindi kayang ituro ng mga magulang sa kanilang mga tahanan. Instead, we should knock and condemn all those corruptions that's happening on DEP-ED administration high ups. This is the source of all the problems we had in our education nowadays.

Im glad the Agency take

Im glad the Agency take action right away;this is how it suppost to be done to prevent from happening again, we should not put down our teacher they work so hard to teach us; Somehow Ms Rocess prostratuion must from her experience doesn't mean everyone is the same, instead of helping or correcting what she notice about our teachers she's trashes them. like it say if your not part of the solution you become part of the problem.

STRIKE ONE!!!

Ano, gusto nyo pa? Dito walang suspension!

Ika nga, "BATU-BATO SA LANGIT, ANG TAMAAN WAG MAGALIT". May dahilan ba't nasabi niya iyon.

NOT ONLY BY THE BOOK, BUT BY EXPERIENCE". The latter is the most effective way of teaching, AND NOT BY RESEARCHES (NA WALANG KABULUHAN), ASSIGNMENTS, PROJECTS (NA MINSAN NOT IN-LINE WITH THE TOPIC) at kung anu-anu pang ibibigay sa mga students NA NAGPAPAHIRAP LANG SA KANILA. The message of Osang is true. at dapat matigil na yan.

That is a wake-up call to DepEd.

the truth hurts

the truth hurts!!!

lets open our eyes!!!
