WASHINGTON - Barack Obama and his wife Michelle shared their first dance as the new president and first lady on Tuesday evening, swaying to the singing of pop star Beyonce at glittering inauguration celebrations.

Kicking off the first of ten inaugural balls, Obama held his wife close while they slowly grooved to Beyonce's performance of "At Last," the love song made famous by blues singer Etta James.

The new president wore a black tuxedo with white bow tie and First Lady Michelle Obama wore an elegant white, one-shoulder, floor-length gown.

When Obama twirled his wife around, the crowd roared with delight.

Guests at the black-tie event held up cameras to capture the moment at the "Neighborhood Ball," meant to honor community activists and grass-roots organizers instead of the rich and powerful that often dominate inaugural parties.

Prior to hitting the dance floor, Obama said the "Neighborhood Ball" captured the spirit of his campaign that relied on an army of volunteers.

"Thanks for this honor. Thanks for this privilege. And, remember what we said during this campaign yes, we can."
