MANILA, Philippines -- The director of "Sisterakas" has an answer to detractors of the film calling it "trash" compared to certain entries to the recent 38th Metro Manila Film Festival.

"Naku, lalo na itong MMFF, kasi nag-third best picture kami, hindi nag-Best Picture ang 'Thy Womb'," film director Wenn V. Deramas was quoted as saying by entertainment news site Philippine Entertainment Portral.

"Sinasabi, 'Naku, basurang pelikula 'yan!' Nilangaw ba kami? Kami ba ang nilangaw? Hindi kami basura," he said.

Starring Kris Aquino, Vice Ganda and Ai Ai delas Alas, "Sisterakas" went on to become the highest grossing local film of all time, surpassing the box-office success of another Deramas film, "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin".

At the 38th MMFF Awards Night, the Star Cinema and Viva Films co-production was named 3rd Best Picture.

"Thy Womb", an internationally acclaimed film by Brillante Mendoza, won Best Director for the Filipino filmmaker, Best Actress for Nora Aunor and numerous other awards at the same film festival. However, it was not among the top three films awarded with the Best Picture trophy.

Coming off its success in a number international film festivals, "Thy Womb" was expected to reap the top awards at the MMFF.

Of his recent string of comedy films -- "Tanging Ina" starring delas Alas, for instance, has evolved into a film franchise -- Deramas said his audience continues to look for big screen offerings that can make people laugh.

Deramas is gearing up to direct 2 more comedy films this year -- one co-starring Maricel Soriano and Vice Ganda, and another starring Soriano and comedienne Eugene Domingo.
