'Princess and I' exits as No. 1 show nationwide
MANILA, Philippines -- The "royal ending" of the Kapamilya series starring Kathryn Bernardo as a long-lost princess ended Friday night as the No. 1 most watched program in the country.
The final episode of "Princess and I" aired on February 1 turned in a nationwide rating of 38.1%, according to TV ratings data of multinational market research group Kantar Media.
The ABS-CBN series' competing program aired on GMA-7, "Indio," meanwhile, only garnered 19.2% in national TV ratings on the same day.
In the "royal ending" of "Princess and I", the character of Enrique Gil, Dasho Jao, is revealed to be the "I" in the series' title. The Yangdon royalty is shown retelling his story of love and redemption, as shaped by his close relationship with Princess Areeyah/Mikay (Bernardo).
Mikay and Gino (Daniel Padilla), meanwhile, are set to marry in two years, as the two warring kingdoms of Yangdon grow in reconciliation at the will of the princess and her father King Anand (Albert Martinez).
Since it began airing in April last year, "Princess and I" amassed strong nationwide viewership as the royal twists in its story unfolded. It reached its peak -- 40% in nationwide viewership -- in June.
Meanwhile, ranking No. 2 in the list of most watched programs in the country last Friday was the documentary on the development of the new Kapamilya series "Juan dela Cruz."
Hosted by Kim Atienza, "Juan dela Cruz: Ang Simula" enjoyed an audience lead-in from the finale of "Princess and I," garnering a nationwide rating of 33.5%.
On Monday, the premiere telecast of "Juan dela Cruz" registered 36.5% in national TV ratings, also according to data from Kantar Media.
Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes, more than AGB Nielsen's 1,980 homes that are only based in urban areas. Kantar Media's panel represents 100% of the total Philippine TV viewing population, while AGB Nielsen reportedly represents only 57% of the Philippine TV viewing population.
