Lea Salonga to remain apolitical
MANILA, Philippines - International artist Lea Salonga has clarified that she is not endorsing any political candidate amid speculation that she is supporting Liberal Party standard-bearer Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.
Salonga has been identified with Noynoy ever since she sang “Bayan Ko” during the funeral of the presidential candidate’s mother, former president Corazon “Cory” Aquino.
The world-renowned singer, however, said she is still undecided. She also explained that she performed the song “because the Aquino family was very gracious in asking me to sing it.”
"As much as it's (Bayan Ko) identified with me now, it’s really the personal anthem of Tita Cory, of Corazon Aquino. And I sang it because I was asked by her family to sing that particular song. And Kris, that was the one song she wanted for me to sing. So, if it's identified with me, it's only because the Aquino family was very gracious in asking me to sing it," Salonga said.
Salonga stressed that she would remain apolitical “so that whoever gets elected I would be able to sing for them.”
“I have a feeling that whoever gets elected as president there would be opportunities to entertain at the Palace, which I've done for just about every president since (Ferdinand) Marcos. So, I'm hoping for that," Salonga said.
When asked what she is looking for in a candidate, the singer said: "It really depends on what each candidate stands for and what they can bring to the table…. I really want to know what they can do for our future and what they can do to propel our country forward.”
“That's I'm more interested in. And if I feel that a certain candidate is the most capable and the best that we can have for the job, then that's the one that I will vote for," she said.
Meanwhile, Salonga is busy promoting "Cats," which will be shown on July 24 at the CCP Main Theater.
Salonga also bared that she might do a reunion movie with Aga Muhlach next year.
My Idol
It is wise decision to stay away from Politics coz if you participate in Politics your life begin flurry. Not unlike before the politician is sincere to help their countrymen but now I don't think so, look even in Barangay level the GREED is chronic.
Lea above the fray....
Lea's thoughts on these elections are admirable.
Those remarks are representative a mature and a smart artist,
never going down to the level of dirty politics but always maintaining
high standards of unifying instead of dividing the one and only country we all love and cherish.
