MANILA – Regine Velasquez put up a strong front as she recalled her last moments with her late father, Gerardo Velasquez, or Mang Gerry as he was fondly called.

Mang Gerry passed away last Monday due to a cardiac arrest possibly due to a complication from a recurring pneumonia.

In an interview with “Buzz ng Bayan” which aired on Sunday, Velasquez said her father already looked weak the day before he died.

“Actually nung Sunday he didn’t look well. He looked pale and parang yellow-ish siya, very unusual. He was in pain but ino-observe lang siya ng mga doctors. Nung 11 p.m, my mother decided na to rush him to the hospital,” she said.

Velasquez, however, said that was not the first time that they rushed Mang Gerry to the hospital.

“Last year talaga when he got really sick, he got operated on, he survived the operation pero 'yung recovery was the difficult part. I had he had like 10 million pneumonias. We were able to bring him home. Last year we thought we were going to lose him na eh. I was not ready,” she said.

Now that Mang Gerry is no longer with them, Velasquez believes her father is now in a happy place and watching over them.

“I think all of us are doing a good job, nagco-cope naman kami well. God gave us a little bit of time to prepare. We also didn’t want to see Papa na nahihirapan na siya,” she said.

“I didn’t even realize na sobrang daming lives ang na-touch ni Papa. Sobrang daming nagmamhal sa kanya. Nagpapasalamat ako sa lahat ng channels, mala Mang Dolphy lang ang peg. I’m sure he’s so yabang in heaven. I’m sure Papa is so happy,” the singer added.

Velasquez said she owes her career to her father who served as her mentor.

“I wouldn’t be who I am if he didn’t train me, if he didn’t believe in me. He’s my number one fan. Kahit sa defeat, he seems to know how to lift me up. He was a great father, he was very cool, very encouraging,” she said.

Velasquez’s father was laid to rest in Bulacan last Friday.
